Cockermouth NDO referendum delayed

4 June 2014

The proposed Cockermouth Neighbourhood Development Order (NDO) referendum, which was due to take place on Thursday 26th June, has been slightly delayed.

Allerdale Borough Council, who is running the referendum, was originally advised by the Independent NDO Examiner that the voting process would only include those areas directly affected by the NDO. The Council has subsequently received advice from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) that the poll should in fact be related to the wider parish of Cockermouth.

As the Allerdale Executive originally agreed to proceed to referendum based on the recommendations of the Independent Examination, it must now approve the amended recommendations, which opens up the referendum to all Cockermouth residents. This will be discussed at the next Executive on Wednesday 11th June.

An Allerdale Borough Council spokesperson said: “This is a hugely significant development for Cockermouth. If the vote is in favour, it will effectively mean that Cockermouth parish residents can make planning decisions affecting the town without having to seek official planning consent from Allerdale Borough Council. Cockermouth is the first town in the country to reach this stage and we want to get it right by ensuring that everyone who is entitled to vote receives all relevant information.”

Cockermouth was identified as one of the pilot projects for NDOs by the Department of Communities and Local Government in March 2011, and Allerdale Borough Council has become the first Local Authority in the UK to reach the referendum stage.

If approved by the Executive, a revised date for the referendum will be announced by Allerdale Borough Council within the next few weeks.
