Give your views on new residential development in Workington

8 August 2014

A public consultation initiative is about to be launched to get the community’s views about plans for a new residential development in Workington.

Allerdale Investment Partnership (AIP), which is a joint venture between Allerdale Borough Council and the Lucent Strategic Land Fund, is asking those who live and work in and around Workington what they think about proposals for up to 290 new homes to be built on disused land off Ashfield Road South.

This site, which was owned by the Council before being transferred to AIP, was allocated for housing back in 1999 as part of the Allerdale Local Plan. It has lain empty during that time, but now the opportunity has arisen, dueto the creation of AIP, to explore its development potential. This will be one of the first schemes under the new Partnership to reach the planning process.

An outline planning application is due to be submitted by AIP in September. If this is successful, then the site will be sold to housing developers who will have to submit a full detailed planning application before building this new community residential development.

AIP is now asking for the public’s opinions about the plans for the site. A drop-in session is being held at Moorclose Community Centre on Thursday 14 August 2014, from 4pm to 8pm. Leaflets will also be sent to households around the Ashfield Road South site, and will be available from the Council offices at Allerdale House in Workington.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “We want to hear as many opinions as possible about the plans for this site, which will bring much-needed housing to Workington. People may have questions about the affordable housing provision for the area, or how this may affect public transport or other services, for example.

“Any feedback will be reviewed by the project team and, where possible, form part of the outline planning application. At the drop-in session, there will be people on hand to answer any questions there may be about Allerdale Investment Partnership and how that is going to benefit the borough in terms of investment, job creation and future projects. I would encourage as many people as possible to either go along to the information session or comment on the proposals in writing.”

Leaflets about the proposals are available from the council offices at Allerdale House in Workington.
