New flood relief centre opens in Cockermouth

Wednesday, 16 December 2015

A new flood information centre has opened in Cockermouth, to help those residents and businesses cut-off from the rest of the town by the closure of Millers Bridge and Gote Bridge.

The centre is situated in temporary accommodation in Wakefield Road car park. Allerdale Borough Council staff are on hand to provide information on issues such as housing, environmental health, benefits, council tax and other advice. They will be joined by officers from Cumbria County Council who can advise on issues such as social services. The centre will be open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

There is also free food for those affected by the flooding as well as cleaning products including gloves and overalls. There are plans to open a small canteen to provide hot food as soon as possible.

Allerdale Borough Council has had help from Doosan Babcock, Cumbria County Council, Churches Together and Cockermouth Rotary to provide this service.

Meanwhile, the other flood relief centre in Cockermouth, which has been in Christchurch on Sullart Street, will now be at Christchurch Rooms, on South Street from Wednesday 16 December. This centre will continue to provide advice and help to those affected by the flooding and is open from 9am to 5pm.
