Allerdale Borough Council announces new Mayor

15 May 2014

Allerdale Borough Council last night [Wednesday 14 May 2014] confirmed Councillor Len Davies, the elected member for Cockermouth All Saints ward, as its new Mayor.

Councillor Davies has been Deputy Mayor for the past 12 months and has served on the authority since 2011. He is also a Cockermouth Town Councillor and is a familiar face around the town, often thanks to his dog Bonnie, who even accompanies him on some Council duties!

Cllr Davies, a father of two daughters, was born in Liverpool. He joined the RAF just before his 16th birthday, serving until he was 30, then took his engineering and instrumentation skills into the private sector. He retrained as a psychotherapy counsellor, a job he did for a decade, then decided to help both body and mind by becoming a fitness consultant.

Cllr Davies dreamed of living in Cumbria after falling in love with the landscape here. He got the chance in 2000 when he was offered a job as a fitness instructor at Moorclose Leisure Centre in Workington, later working at Cockermouth Leisure Centre until his retirement in 2009.

Cllr Davies said: “I was surprised, but very, very honoured, when Bill Bacon asked me to be his Deputy Mayor and I am so proud to become Mayor this year. Ever since I moved to Cumbria I have been met with nothing but kindness and warmth – being elected as a Councillor, and now becoming Mayor, is a great opportunity for me to give something back.”

Cllr Davies’ chosen charities are both causes he has a personal interest in. Reflecting his RAF background, he will be raising funds for the Army, Sea and Air Cadets who have detachments throughout Allerdale. He will also be working with a new charity called Let Laura Speak. It aims to purchase the latest technology for Laura Oglanby from Aspatria, who has cerebral palsy, to help her communicate.

Cllr Davies’ Mayoress for the year will be his friend Harriet Chappell. She and her husband, John, met Cllr Davies through their connections to the RAF Association.

At last night’s Mayor Making ceremony, outgoing Mayor, Cllr Bill Bacon was also installed as Deputy Mayor. His wife Valerie will be Deputy Mayoress.
