New visitor facilities in Cockermouth

It’s never been easier to get out and about on foot, or on two wheels, in Cockermouth, thanks to a partnership initiative between Allerdale Borough Council and the Town Council.

Six new bike racks have been installed on Main Street, outside Bryson’s bakery and The New Bookshop, giving cyclists somewhere to lock up their bikes as they shop, eat and drink, and explore the town. Cockermouth is on the Coast to Coast cycle route and is a popular stop-off point for bikers exploring the area.

New maps are also being created, featuring beautifully detailed hand-painted plans of the town centre. The maps will appear on signage in nine locations across the town – in all six of Allerdale Borough Council’s car parks, and in three prominent wall-mounted spots. Visitors will be able to buy printed versions of the maps for £1 from vending machines mounted on the signs, as well as from the Tourist Information Centre. The new maps are due to be installed before Christmas.

The funding for the two projects has been provided by Allerdale Borough Council which gives the borough’s seven towns £10,000 each to use for improvement projects. This year, the large village of Seaton has been added to the list of towns which benefit from this funding.

Councillor Michael Heaslip, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Locality Services, said: “It’s great to see the projects that our town centre managers are creating in conjunction with the town councils to improve the experience for those who live, work and visit our towns. I think these are two excellent initiatives in Cockermouth and will prove really popular.”

Catherine Hetherington, owner of The New Bookshop, added: “We’re very pleased to see the new bike racks now installed outside our shop. They are being well used already and should prove a really useful addition to the bike riding experience in Cockermouth.”
