Recycling arrives in the Newlands Valley

23 June 2014

Communities in the Newlands Valley will benefit from recycling facilities for the first time this summer with the introduction of new large recycling bins provided by Allerdale Borough Council.

The large commercial bins have been placed at Stair Village Hall in Newlands Valley in a partnership between Allerdale Borough Council and Above Derwent Parish Council.

The 1,100 litre bins will provide recycling facilities for cardboard, paper, cans, plastic and glass, and all households are currently being supplied with small hessian sacks to assist with transporting recycling items to the bins.

This is part of the Council’s initiative to increase recycling facilities across Allerdale and follows on from the roll out of purple recycling bags to some of the area’s more challenging to reach places including Bassenthwaite Village, the Borrowdale Valley, Bowness on Solway and Port Carlisle.

Councillor Michael Heaslip, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Locality Services, said: “This is a really positive example of partnership working with parish councils to deliver much sought-after recycling facilities to local communities. Residents in the Newlands Valley have not previously had recycling facilities as the roads are too small for Council refuse vehicles to negotiate.

“However, our aim is to make sure that as many households as possible across the area have access to recycling facilities – whether that’s through our popular purple bag scheme or by providing bins in areas that are hard to reach. We are always looking for new ways for residents to access and benefit from our services.”

Jackie Knights, Clerk at Above Derwent Parish Council said: “When we worked with the Newlands community on the valley’s contribution to the Above Derwent Parish Plan in 2012, recycling featured as a big issue with 88 per cent of respondents saying that the provision of recycling facilities would improve the area. Since then, the Parish Council has been working closely with Allerdale Borough Council and other partners to deliver these recycling bins and it is great to have achieved this new service for our parishioners.

“Locals are already delighted and by ‘voting with their recycling’, the bins were half full within just five days!”
