Rugby League World Cup dance programme.

As part of the grand opening to the Rugby League World Cup, dancers are now being recruited to wow the crowds at the West Cumbrian games.

2013 will mark the Rugby League World Cup’s return to the UK with many North West towns, including Workington, selected to host the tournament. To mark this prestigious occasion, RLWC2013 is coordinating a wide programme of dance activities.

Derwent Park stadium will be host to Tonga v Scotland on 29 October and Scotland v Italy on 3 November. Allerdale’s winning bid to host the games provides a number of wider economic benefits, over and above the honour of hosting these great showdowns. In addition, Derwent Park has seen extensive improvements, part-funded by Allerdale Borough Council and Britain’s Energy Coast, including new grandstand seating, enhanced floodlights, a new electronic scoreboard and improvements to the playing surface.

Leah Biddle has been appointed as Dance Community Engagement Coordinator for the North West and she is looking to recruit a number of community dance groups or other interested parties of all ages and abilities to take part in two elements of the RLWC2013 match day entertainment.

The Rugby League World Cup organisers require 150 dancers to take part in the pre-match performances created by professional choreographer, Jeanefer Jean-Charles at Derwent Park Stadium in Workington. These 150 dancers will also be given the opportunity to perform the official RLWC2013 viral dance choreographed by New Art Club.

Selected groups will work with a team of experienced dance artists for approximately 10 sessions. During this time they will learn set dance routines while also developing their own ideas for choreography. Groups will then be required to attend two rehearsals with all other groups prior to a match day rehearsal.

If you are aware of any groups that may be interested in this unique performance opportunity or if you work directly with suitable groups yourself then please contact Leah Biddle via email at: or Rebecca Stamper, Allerdale Borough Council’s Sports & Leisure Officer on 01900 702711
