Single Commemorative Act to mark the Centenary of World War One

Tuesday 7 March 2017

A civic ceremony will take place to mark the Centenary of World War One at Allerdale House in Workington on Monday 13 March 2017.

The ceremony, which is being held by The Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Celia Tibble, will take place on Commonwealth Day to reflect the involvement of so many representatives from around the Commonwealth who supported Britain in the conflicts.

This is a national civic event with similar ceremonies taking place at Council Offices across the country at the same time.

The Commonwealth flag will be raised at the usual time of 10am outside Allerdale House. Guests are requested to be seated in the Council Chamber by 10.20am and the ceremony will begin with the Mayor of Allerdale reading the Commonwealth affirmation, as well as the extinguishing of four candles to symbolise the feeling of darkness that came over Britain 100 years ago and the sacrifices made by all those involved in the Great War.

Three candles will then be relit and remain alight until the event is repeated on the next Commonwealth Day in 2018.
