Spare a few days and get excited about the Solway Coast

Monday 2 January 2017

Those who love the outdoors and history are invited to join a volunteer project which will give people the chance to discover the beautiful and fascinating Solway coast.

The Solway Wetlands Landscape Partnership has been in existence for four years and, in that time, thousands of children, young people and adults have learnt more about the Solway environment and heritage through the project.

Now a new phase of the initiative is about to begin with volunteers needed to help visitors and locals alike seek out the history and unique environment of this very special area. They can become nature explorers – getting clarty with some ‘bogsploration’, finding the shy hidden wildlife, discovering the area’s rich history and archaeology, and encouraging a love of this landscape.

From Monday 9 January, training sessions are being held for those who want to become learning volunteers – all that is needed is a minimum of five days’ commitment per year.

Chris Spencer, project manager for the Solway Wetlands Landscape Partnership, said: “Thousands of children and young people have benefited from our schools activities on the Solway nature reserves or helping out on the archaeology at Holme Cultram Abbey.

“There are loads of activities involved, not least our ‘bogsploration’ where we do experiments to work out how wet the bog is, and how acidic it is, and how the flora and fauna has adapted. Everyone has lots of fun getting stuck in! Our Nature Explorer initiative is a unique opportunity for local children to spend a week learning about the very special environment where they live. They will become independent nature explorers with the skills, knowledge and confidence to enjoy their local ecology.

“We’re asking for volunteers to continue and expand these opportunities – they will be supported by the partners in the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Natural England, Tullie House Museum, Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

“We are keen to involve people with skills and knowledge of ecology or heritage, who would like to share their interest with others, as well as those with a background in a learning environment with children or adults who want to build their knowledge of environmental or heritage education.”

Anyone who would like to find out more, or get involved as a volunteer, should contact Chris Spencer via email at or call 016973 33055.
