New Conservation Area development guide

14 October 2015

Views are being sought on a new draft guide designed to advise residents and businesses on how best to design developments within Conservation Areas.

The borough has 21 Conservation Areas in its towns and villages which lie outside of the Lake District National Park. Their purpose to protect and enhance the special historic and architectural characteristics of the area through the planning process.  The new guide seeks to provide advice on how to alter an existing property, or design a new one in a way that maintains and enhances the local Conservation Area.

The draft guide sets out the kind of things that those planning a development should take into account including the development’s wider setting, the local streetplan and frontages, as well as local landmarks, pavements and street furniture.

Mark Fryer, Executive Member responsible for Economic Development, said: “Our key priorities include a commitment to enhance our towns and strengthen our economy through tourism and making our area a great place to live, work and visit. Conservation Areas play a key role in this, making our towns look great and preserving the characteristics which make them of interest.”

The guidance can be found on the Council’s website at:
