Who are your local sporting heroes?

26 September 2015

The Allerdale Sport Awards 2015 are back for the fourth successive year – and it’s time for the public to nominate their own local sporting heroes.

Allerdale Borough Council is coordinating the awards, which will be held at the Wave Centre in Maryport on Saturday 31 October.

Paul Nixon, former England cricketer who enjoyed a great career representing Cumberland, the MCC, Kent, Delhi Giants and Leicestershire, will be the guest speaker. He was born in Langwathby and, since his retirement, works as a cricket coach, professional speaker and within the media.

The Allerdale Sport Awards 2015 aim to pay tribute to the outstanding talents, commitment and successes of teams and individuals throughout the borough. As well as celebrating individual sporting talent, the awards recognise the hard work of coaches and volunteers.

That could include the dedication of someone who has taken a young athlete to the top of their game, or the unsung heroes like family and club members who wash kit and drive competitors every week to games and fixtures across the country.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Growth, said: “This area has seen some fantastic success stories in recent months, in a big range of sports, so there should be no shortage of nominations for these awards. The judges are going to have a tough job job deciding who should win.

“I’m a huge sports fan and think these awards are the perfect way to celebrate the talent and dedication of our local sportsmen and women, and giving inspiration to others. As a Council, we’re committed to creating great sport and leisure experiences – as development of the fantastic new leisure centre in Workington shows. By providing great sporting facilities like this, we are giving athletes of the future a great start in their sporting careers.

The award categories include:

·         Sports Person

·         Junior Sports Person

·         Rising Stars

·         Coach of the Year

·         Volunteer of the Year

·         Performance award for a person with a disability

·         Young Leader

·         Team of the Year

·         Special Award – achievements which aren’t necessarily related to sporting prowess, like the growth or development of a club, or don’t fit into the other categories

Members of the public have until midnight on Friday 25 September to nominate their local sporting heroes. To nominate someone for an award, simply visit the Active Cumbria website at http://www.activecumbria.org/developing-sport/events/allerdale-sports-awards

Individual category winners will also be put forward to the County Sports Awards, which are due to take place in November.

The awards couldn’t happen without their sponsors - Allerdale Borough Council, Active Cumbria, Cumbrian SPAAF, GLL, concrete company D A Harrison, John Hobans Travel, Lakes College, New Balance, Proactive Physical Health and Wright Sport Services.
