Allerdale Borough Council commits financial support to West Cumbria Rape Crisis

The possibility of West Cumbria Rape Crisis closing is a major concern for Allerdale Borough Council. At a meeting arranged in response to the news report of the situation last week the Council leaders agreed to provide financial assistance to prevent this happening.

"The services offered by West Cumbria Rape Crisis are too important to let disappear" said Councillor Barbara Cannon, Deputy Leader of Allerdale Borough Council. "Vulnerable people really need the support this organisation provides, and we cannot sit back and watch it shut down" she continued.

The Council is granting a one-off payment of £5,000 to West Cumbria Rape Crisis towards their £25,000 target to be raised by 15 November. The grant is coming from a budget which would normally be used for cost of living salary increases for senior staff as these are not being made this financial year.

Carol Swainson of West Cumbria Rape Crisis is delighted with the grant and said "This is fantastic news and really helps us get towards our target and our chances of survival."

Councillor Cannon added "This Council is showing its commitment to their work which crucially supports people at a time of need. I would urge other bodies, public and private, to join us in making sure the organisation can continue to serve the people of West Cumbria"
