Haven’t dipped your toe in the water since school?

‘It’s time to rediscover swimming’ – that’s the message from sports providers in Allerdale who are organising a Swim for All day on Saturday 6 February.

The event is being hosted by Allerdale Borough Council and its partners GLL, which manages Cockermouth Leisure Centre, Workington Leisure Centre and Keswick Leisure Pool under the Better brand, and the Wigton Baths Trust. With funding through Sport England, the Council is developing ways to get people back into sport and physical activity, and the experts say swimming is the perfect way to start. The sport is low impact, can be done indoors, is accessible for all and requires very little equipment. It doesn’t have to be competitive, creates a great social environment and can help get rid of stress.

All the swimming pools involved will open their doors on Saturday 6 February to give the general public a chance to try the different watery activities each venue has to offer. Sessions include aquacise (aerobics in the pool), get fit through swimming, adult swimming lesson tasters, lifeguard training, Splash and Smile sessions for children with disabilities, family swims, water polo, antenatal swimming and more. There will also be opportunities to get advice on water confidence, for those who are unsure about getting into the water for the first time, and there will be specific sessions for people with disabilities or limiting health issues.

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member with responsibility for sports development, said: “Currently, 33% of the 16-plus population in Allerdale take part in sport once a week and we want that figure to increase. We are working with Sport England and our partners to try and make it easier to make healthy choices, and that’s why we’re involved in Swim for All. The important message is that, once you’ve tried it, if you like it, you can access these sessions all year round and make it a habit for life.

“It’s also one of those activities that you can try even if you’re not experienced. Anyone can go down to their local pool and splash around, and with the new leisure centre due to open in Workington this summer with an eight lane main pool and dedicated learner pool, now is the time to have a go.

All Swim for All sessions will be free of charge but for places are limited for some activities so advance booking is advisable.
