Get your tickets now for the fabulous Taste Cumbria festival

4 September 2013

Don’t miss out on seeing two top UK chefs at the fourth Taste Cumbria food festival in Cockermouth this month.

Charismatic celebrity chefs Paul Rankin and Aldo Zilli are the headline attractions at the foodie extravaganza, which attracts tens of thousands of people to the town. Cumbria’s superstar chef Simon Rogan will also be bringing his pop-up restaurant back to the town – this time with two Michelin stars. Simon’s Cartmel venue, L’Enclume, has just been voted in the best restaurant in the UK by the Good Food Guide.

The town’s fourth festival, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday September 28-29 and is in association with Cumbria Life magazine, will feature food demonstrations from Rankin, Zilli and the best Cumbrian chefs, as well as the Main Street producers’ market with dozens of stalls selling the best of the county’s food and drink, and a host of additional attractions and events.

The event is supported by Allerdale Borough Council, Cumbria Tourism and Cockermouth Town Council.

Paul Rankin, the first chef in Northern Ireland to gain a Michelin star, will headline the celebrity chef stage on the Saturday at its new venue of Christ Church. Rankin is best known for being one of the longest-standing and most successful chefs on Ready Steady Cook. He has also appeared on Step up to the Plate, Local Food Heroes, Saturday Kitchen and Ten Mile Menu.

Rankin said: “I’m delighted to be making my first visit to Taste Cumbria. Cumbria has absolutely fantastic produce and from what I’ve heard the festival looks like a really special event that connects really well with local consumers and producers. It’s going to be fun!”

Rankin will be joined on Saturday by Cumbrian TV chef Peter Sidwell, who has been filming a second series of Britain’s Best Bakery for ITV and runs the Peter Sidwell @ Rheged café and his cookery school near Keswick.

Sunday headliner Aldo Zilli is an award-winning chef and restaurateur who specialises in Italian, vegetarian and seafood cuisine. The exuberant Italian was founder and chef patron of some of London’s most exciting restaurants including Signor Zilli and Zilli Fish. He has written 10 books and appears regularly on TV cookery shows as well as appearances on Celebrity Fit Club and Celebrity X Factor.

Paul Rankin will also join Zilli on Sunday for an entertaining double-act demonstration which promises to be one of highlights of the festival.

Zilli, who appeared at the first Taste Cumbria Festival in 2009, said. “It’s great to be returning to Cumbria and to see how the festival has grown into a major annual event celebrating Cumbrian food in such a stunning setting. I’ve known Paul for many years and we have worked together before so I can’t wait to have some great fun with some great food.”

The Rogan pop-up restaurant, which last year wowed festivalgoers in a marquee at Dovenby Hall, will this year be set up in glass-fronted premises next to Mitchell’s auction mart with spectacular views of the fells. The four-course menu, costing £60 with an optional £20 matched wine list, will be served by Lakes College students at three sittings on Saturday and one Sunday lunch sitting.
