Workington taxi marshalls

6 September 2013

The West Cumbria Community Safety Partnership, along with Allerdale Borough Council, will be introducing new taxi marshals to help reduce alcohol related crime and disorder in Workington.

The taxi marshals will provide a high visibility presence in the town at key times. Their role will be to monitor queues at the taxi ranks and reduce incidents of alcohol related disorder. The Community Safety Partnership developed the initiative, and it will be funded with money provided by the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The marshals will be deployed in town every Saturday night, the proposed start date is Saturday 28 September 2013 until Christmas, plus additional key dates over the Christmas holidays. The Community Safety Partnership is also funding a similar scheme in Whitehaven town centre.

Councillor Philip Tibble Executive member and Chairman of the West Cumbria Community Safety Partnership said: “We want people to enjoy the nightlife in Workington, but we also want them to feel safe. We want to prevent a small minority from spoiling other peoples enjoyment. The taxi marshals will prevent disorder in and around the taxi ranks ensuring people can get home safely at the end of the evening.”
