Town centre cleans

Wednesday 10 June 2015

Annual town centre community clean-up begins

Community groups are being urged to join together for a series of town centre clean-ups across Allerdale.

Organised by the Council’s Town Centre Area Managers Joe Broomfield and Toni Magean, the annual sprucing up of the local town centres has been a great success in previous years. This year, for the first time, Seaton, on the outskirts of Workington, has been added to the programme.

Starting in Silloth, this Friday, June 12, people are being urged to come out of their homes and businesses and clean whatever is on their doorsteps – from the road sign at the end of their street, to the seating nearby, or to pick up litter close to their properties. Joe and Toni want to hear about the local grot spots that need attention, with the help from volunteers.

A focus has been made on not only the town centres, but also the local beauty spots in the surrounding areas where people walk on a daily basis. The Council’s Streetscene team will be cleaning the larger, hard-to-reach areas and coordinating with volunteers to target the areas where litter and waste collects.

The clean-up dates are as follows, commencing at 10am at each town meeting point:

  • Friday 12 June – Silloth – meeting at Silloth Community Centre
  • Tuesday 16 June – Aspatria – meeting frontage of Local Links
  • Friday 19 June – Wigton – meeting at Café Twelve62 in Wigton Market Hall
  • Tuesday 22 June – Maryport – meeting at the Wave Centre car park
  • Friday 26 June – Cockermouth – meeting at Riversmeet Resource Centre
  • Tuesday 30 June – Workington – meeting outside of Allerdale House
  • Friday 3 July – Keswick – meeting at Keswick Town Hall
  • Tuesday 7 July – Seaton – meeting at St Paul’s Church

Michael Heaslip, Executive Member for Locality Services in Allerdale, said: “The Council’s Streetscene teams do a fantastic job; however there is always room for extra help in some areas.

“They will be working with a variety of community groups on different projects in each town. With the previous success of the town clean-up events, it is clear to see what a difference the extra help from volunteers makes to the local communities and town centres. Allerdale Borough Council is delighted to host this fantastic initiative that enhances our local environment.”

Any volunteers are welcome and should come suitably dressed – cleaning materials and free refreshments will be provided.

The cleaning process for each town will last for approximately three hours, however volunteers may stay for as little or as long as they please.
