Training course offers accreditation for landlords in Allerdale

Wednesday 5 October 2016

A training course for landlords will be held as part of the Cumbria Landlord Accreditation Scheme (CLAS) at Allerdale House on 12 October, offering accreditation to landlords in the area.

In order to become accredited with CLAS, landlords must complete the one day foundation course, which is being offered free of charge for those with properties in the local area. CLAS was launched by Allerdale Borough Council in partnership with the National Landlord Association in 2014, to recognise good practice and improve conditions in the private rented sector.

The accreditation gives tenants the confidence to know that they are renting property from a responsible landlord who is providing quality rented accommodation.

The Landlord Foundation course is on Wednesday 12 October from 9.30am – 5pm and is free of charge for landlords with properties in the Allerdale area and has been designed to assist both new and more experienced landlords to develop their professional skills. The session outlines everything landlords need to know from the start to the finish of a tenancy, including practical help, rights and responsibilities and realising and maximising returns to help strengthen the business.

Once a landlord has become accredited, they must complete two hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the first year that they are accredited and 10 hours for every year thereafter.

Councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes, portfolio holder with responsibility for housing, said “The scheme was initially brought into place to help landlords further understand their responsibilities, and we encourage those with properties to let in the area to attend. The Council has successfully held this course in the past, with both experienced and new landlords attending. Each one said they found it useful and learned something new. By becoming accredited, landlords may find it easier to attract new tenants, or give current occupants peace of mind.”
