Volunteers blitz Curwen Park balsam

Generous members of the Rotary Club of Workington have helped blitz a park which was being swamped by an invasive plant.

The team of volunteers joined Allerdale Borough Council’s parks and opens spaces officer Kirsten Mawby to help control the spread of Himalayan Balsam at Curwen Park in Workington. They managed to remove 36 large bin bags of the alien species of plant, stripping an area stretching from the skate park to the park’s old compost heaps.  Councillor Michael Heaslip, the Council’s Executive Member for Locality Services, said: “Himalayan balsam is a major problem in our parks and open spaces because it spreads so rapidly and smothers the vegetation in its path. It’s an arduous and time consuming task and we are very grateful to all our volunteers for the time they give us in helping with tasks like this.”

John Head, Community and Vocational chair for the Rotary Club of Workington, added: “When we heard that the Council was looking for volunteers to tackle this balsam problem we were very keen to help. It was hard work but hugely rewarding to see the van full of sacks at the end of the day!”
