Vulcan Park outdoor gym takes shape
Allerdale Borough Council is advising residents in Workington
that construction of the outdoor gym at Vulcan Park is starting
soon.
Residents were surveyed about their preference
for equipment in April and the public voted for their favourite
design in July. Park Leisure won the vote and were awarded the
contract for their design which includes equipment such as fitness
bikes, a ski machine and leg and chest presses.
National charity Fields in Trust offered
Allerdale Borough Council £27,000 to construct the outdoor gym as
part of a national campaign aimed at encouraging adults to
exercise. The terms of the grant meant that the money could only be
spent on building an outdoor gym for adult use. Allerdale Borough
Council is also investing £3,000 into the project.
Councillor Michael Heaslip, Executive member
with responsibility for parks, said: “When the Council’s Executive
approved the project in July, we recognised the benefits that the
outdoor gym could bring to the local community in Workington,
particularly in improving health and fitness levels.
“The involvement of residents in selecting the
final design for the gym shows our commitment to both listening to
the views of residents and providing the facilities that best suit
the needs of different communities.”
The outdoor gym will be positioned behind a
hedge, just off a main pathway from Vulcan’s Lane, providing some
privacy to adults working out in the park while still allowing a
view of the play area so that parents can keep an eye on their
children.
The Council apologises for any inconvenience
caused to park users and residents during the construction
phase.
