Have you noticed what's happening in Wigton?

Monday, 12 October 2015

Changes have been made in Wigton town centre to improve the visitor experience for locals and tourists alike.

One of the town’s most historic areas, the cobbled Corn Market to the front of St. Mary’s Church, has received a facelift, with new benches and fencing installed to make it into a more social area. It is regularly used for the town’s market and the will now provide more space and better access for church events.

In addition, a new community noticeboard has been installed outside the Local Links centre, allowing local groups and attractions to promote themselves and their forthcoming events. The noticeboard is already being used by Wigton Theatre, the swimming pool and other local groups, and news and events from all organisations is being welcomed.

An additional 2000 Wigton Heritage Trail leaflets have also been ordered. This initiative was only launched in the Summer of 2015 and has proved incredibly popular with the free walking trail maps flying off the shelves of town centre businesses.

All these projects have been part funded by Allerdale Borough Council from its annual £10,000 grant for the town centre’s projects with contributions from Wigton Town Council and Wigton Town Team.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “It is great to see the £10,000 grants we give to each of Allerdale’s town centres being put to such good use. The whole aim distributing funding in this way is to tackle the projects which really matter to our communities - that’s why we ask the town councils and community and business organisations to tell us how they think the money can be used for the greater good.

“I took a trip to Wigton to see the results and think the Corn Market is looking great. I hope that the community noticeboard will also be very well used by local people to find new activities and events, as well as tourists who are looking what the area has to offer.”

Alison Dodd, Clerk to Wigton Town Council, added: “we are delighted with the new look Corn Market, and have received many positive comments about it.  The new notice board is proving popular with many community groups/clubs who are already making good use of it.”
