Wigton man fined for benefit fraud

12 December 2013

A 26-year-old man from Wigton has pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming almost £4,000 in benefits.

Simon McFayden, of Park Road, was working as a sales assistant at Argos when he claimed housing benefit, Council Tax Benefit and a Council Tax discount totalling £3,980.96 which he was not entitled.

The offences were carried out when Mr McFayden was living at Ellen Close in Wigton. He notified Allerdale Borough Council about his change of address when he moved to Park Road and his benefits were amended but he failed to tell the Council that he had been promoted to team leader at work and that his wage had increased as a result.

The court heard that Mr McFayden knew his benefit entitlement was affected by the amount of income that he had, and he admitted not informing the Council about the increase in his salary. He pleaded guilty to receiving benefits that he was not entitled to, was fined £180 and told to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Members of the public who suspect benefit fraud is being committed can call Allerdale Borough Council’s 24-hour Benefit Fraud Hotline in confidence on 0800 169 5119 or complete, anonymously, an online form at
