Volunteers sought for Workington BioBlitz

14 April 2014

Allerdale Borough Council is seeking volunteers with a keen interest in plants and wildlife to take part in a 24-hour BioBlitz at Workington Hall Parklands (Curwen Park) from 11:59 am on Saturday 19th July.

A BioBlitz is a great fun outdoor event where as many people as possible; from experts to novices, work together to carry out a fast and intensive survey of all forms of life in a natural space. Over the 24-hour period, a number of family activities and free guided walks will take place to examine and record the vast amount of plant and animal wildlife found within the historic park.

Activities will include moth trapping, bat and owl walks, wildflower surveys, red squirrel walks and examining reptiles. The event will then come to a close at 12 noon on Sunday 20th July.

Allerdale Borough Council is working in partnership with the Cumbrian Biodiversity Data Centre and the Allerdale Disability Association to hold the event, which is open to everyone. A number of experts and interested volunteers to help with running the activities are needed.

If you have an interest in plants or wildlife or if you have a specialty in identifying particular species and would like to assist with the event, please email the Workington Nature Partnership Officer, Raegan McKay at or call 01900 702 702.
