Workington Hall one of the best in the Country

29 July 2013

Workington Hall Parklands has been awarded a Green flag status highlighting its status as one of the best green spaces in the Country.

For somewhere to have a green flag status it must meet the international standards including that it is an environmentally sustainable welcoming place which is healthy, safe and secure with lots of community involvement. It must be clean, well maintained and improve the conservation and heritage value of the spaces.

The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities.

Kirsten Mawby Allerdale’s Parks and Open Spaces Officer said: “This is the second flag we have achieved in the Workington area which is an achievement we can be proud of. The Council would like to thank the local people and our contractors who have been involved in bringing Workington Hall Parklands up to Green Flag level. We’ve had many different activities including planting meadows, planting trees and clearing invasive weeds such as Himalayan balsam. We look forward to working with local people to into the future.”

Councillor Michael Heaslip Executive Member with responsibility for parks and open spaces said: “The Council works in partnership with others to maintain and improve parks, open spaces and historic sites. It shows that working together can deliver something of value for the whole community. Everyone involved in helping to receive this Green Flag award should be very proud of themselves and I would like to thank them all for their hard work.”

Workington Hall is a Grade 2 Listed Historic House and Garden, and this award is for the gardens and grounds, including the areas known as Curwen Park and Mill Field. Together known as the Parklands, the formal landscaped areas were laid out over 200 years ago by Capability Brown's foreman, are unique in the northwest, and of national importance for environmental heritage.
