World Cup fever hits Workington

23 October 2013

Rugby League World Cup excitement is growing in West Cumbria with the arrival of the Scotland team.

It’s less than a week to the first match at Workington’s Derwent Park stadium, where the Scots will play Tonga on Tuesday 29 October. The Scotland squad was welcomed to the town last night [Tuesday] with a Civic Reception, and they will now get involved in a host of events in advance of their first game.

There is a range of community activities planned for the squad. Next week they will head to M-Sport in Dovenby near Cockermouth to meet Malcolm Wilson’s rally team and take a tour of the world class workshop and research and development facilities. In between, there are coaching masterclasses, a schools’ tournament, inter-club challenges and public walkabouts.

And the hosting of the international sporting ties is about more than just rugby. A cultural programme featuring a torchlit performance and parade through the streets, firework display, opera, and pop up theatre. A World Cup song has also been written by Keswick composer Russell Burbush, and this will be performed at the matches.

Allerdale Borough Council and Britain’s Energy Coast part-funded improvements to Derwent Park stadium, including new grandstand seating, enhanced floodlights and a new scoreboard, to ensure it met the criteria for a World Cup venue.

Councillor Alan Smith, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council said: “It was unthinkable that this international celebration of world class sport could take place in England without some of the matches being held in West Cumbria. This is a rugby league heartland. People here are barmy about rugby league and they had to be given the opportunity to see some of the greatest players in the world in action.

“We have invested time and money in making sure Derwent Park is in fine shape, ready to welcome the thousands of visiting fans who will be coming to support their teams – and who will see what an amazing place West Cumbria is and hopefully return many times in the future.

“We should also look forward to the legacy of this World Cup. Aside from the economic benefits and improvements that have been made at Derwent Park, so many clubs, schools and community groups have been involved in sports events over the past few months. I hope this will inspire our young people so we can produce some of the world class stars for the future.”
