First World War commemoration event in Allerdale

1 May 2014

11am Saturday 10 May 2014

A special commemoration event to mark the centenary of the First World War will be held in Workington on Saturday 10 May.

Initiated by the Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Bill Bacon, the parade, church service and reception will involve around 500 people from across Allerdale borough. Organisations taking part include the Duke of Lancaster's Regimental Band, the Royal British Legion, local military cadets, schools, community organisations, town or parish councils and civic dignitaries.

Councillor Bacon said: "I had the idea for this event last year and, after several months planning I am really pleased to see so many groups from across the borough, including a number of schools, wanting to be involved. It's an exciting culmination to my year of office. I'm proud of the people of Allerdale and grateful for all the support received in the organisation of the event.”

A number of organisations have been involved in organising the parade and service, including Nuclear Management Partners (NMP) the parent body organisation of Sellafield Limited.

John Chappell from NMP is a former RAF serviceman and leader of the organising group for the event. He said: "I am delighted that NMP is able to support the community in this way. Our commitment to the area is significant – we willingly support events such as this with staff time, expertise, and funding. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and working with this committed group of people."

Members of the public are encouraged to support and watch the parade and join the service at the war memorial in Vulcan’s Park. The service at St Michael’s and its parish rooms is a ticketed event for organisations and formal groups taking part in the parade.

The times for the event are as follows:

  • 10.45am – Parade participants gather at Central Station Car Park, Central Way, CA14 3GS
  • 11am – Parade sets off along Oxford Street, past Workington Library, along Vulcans Lane, to Vulcan Park
  • 11.15am (approx.) – A short service, followed by the Last Post, takes place at the war memorial, Vulcans Park
