New attractions planned for leisure centre thanks to £50,000 grant

Thursday 8 October

Fun and quirky play equipment is being planned for the new leisure centre in Workington after a £50,000 grant application was successful.

Funding body WREN has agreed to provide the money to install giant climbable letters and protective rubber matting for the centre’s youngest visitors. The grant will also be used to buy specially designed tables which can be used to play games such as snakes and ladders and have roads for toy cars, as well as for eating and drinking. The funding will also contribute to the cost of landscaping of the grounds around the new sports facility.

The new swimming pool and leisure centre is being built by Allerdale Borough Council on land next to Brow Top car park in the town centre. It is due to open to the public in Spring 2016.

The grant has been awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund. WREN is a not-for-profit business which awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by waste company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Councillor Michael Heaslip, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member for locality services, said: “This grant funding is great news. We want to make the new leisure centre as attractive as possible to people of all ages so installations like the climbable letters and the games tables will add quirky new appeal for our visitors.

“They’ll be free to use too so we hope this will become a really social space for families and visitors.”

The new swimming pool and leisure centre in Workington will replace the two ageing buildings which house the town’s current swimming pool and sports centre at Moorclose. They date back to the 1970s and are inefficient both environmentally and in terms of operational costs, and the cost of extending their lifespan for just five additional years would be more than half the cost of building an entirely new centre.
