Allerdale Borough Council’s 12 Days of
Christmas
Allerdale Borough Council is wishing all its
residents a green Christmas with a festive recycling message.
The Council has teamed up with the west
Cumbrian community choir “Sing Owt!” to record a modern version of
the carol “The 12 Days of Christmas” with a recycling theme.
Renamed “Allerdale Borough Council’s 12 Days
of Christmas”, the song features lyrics including, “On the third
day of Christmas, Allerdale said to me – re-use your old carriers,
recycle food and drink containers and cancel your deliveries.”
The Council has even shot a music video to
accompany the carol, featuring captions to drive home the green
message, such as, “Put Christmas cards, non-metallic wrapping
paper and cardboard packaging into the paper bin” and “Chop up your
real Christmas tree and put it out with the garden bin in the New
Year.”
Councillor Sam Standage, Allerdale Borough
Council’s Executive member with responsibility for the Environment,
said: “At Christmas time there is the potential for people to
generate more waste than at any other time of the year. Everyone
can do their bit to reduce the amount of rubbish produced; reuse
whatever they can instead of throwing things away and recycle as
much as possible.
“We hope people will enjoy our re-working of
this Christmas carol and tune into the message we are trying to put
across.”
The messages of Allerdale Borough Council’s 12
Days of Christmas are:
Check your bin
collections
Collection times and days may change over the
holidays, so check your collection calendar.
Donate unwanted presents
Someone else might want them. Put any clothes
or shoes in a textile recycling bank or take other items to a
charity shop or car boot sale.
Recharge all your
batteries
Avoid creating waste – use rechargeable
batteries instead of disposable ones.)
Put out real trees with the green
bin
If you have a real Christmas tree, please chop
it up and put it out for collection with your garden waste bin come
the New Year.
Save on your food waste
Avoid throwing away food – only buy what you
know you will eat.
Cut down on your
packaging
One of the best ways to save on waste is to
avoid making rubbish in the first place – try to buy produce that
doesn’t have too much wrapping.
Recycle all your
cardboard
Cardboard can be included in the paper
recycling bin. This includes Christmas cards and cardboard
packaging from presents as well as non-metallic wrapping paper.
KEEP ALLERDALE GREEN!
Compost fruit and veg
Fruit and vegetable peelings can’t go in your
garden waste bin but you can get a subsidised home composting bin
for all those orange peelings and carrot tops.
Re-use your old carriers
Reduce plastic bag waste by reusing carrier
bags for your Christmas shopping.
Recycle food and drink
containers
Remember to recycle glass and plastic bottles,
tins, cans and glass jars.
