The building of Barker Crossing
Allerdale Borough Council has supported the
British Army with its rapid construction of a new footbridge to
reunite communities north and south of the River Derwent, following
severe floods.
The Council made land available on both sides of the river,
arranged an operating base for soldiers and equipment, and offered
other support for the mammoth project to be completed in
record time.
Installing the footbridge has made a huge difference
to those in areas north of the River Derwent who had felt isolated
and cut off from the rest of the town.
One of Allerdale Borough Council’s key aims was to get families
and friends back in touch with each other as quickly as possible,
and able to access town centre services such as shops, banks,
doctors and the Post Office. The Council lobbied hard to make sure
this vital link was re-established between two parts of the
Workington community.
