How to register to vote - Individual Electoral Registration

All those who are eligible to vote in elections must be on the electoral register. The way we all register to vote has changed.

How is the new system to register to vote different?

  • You can now register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
  • Everyone is responsible for registering themselves. Under the old system the ‘head of every household’ could register everyone who lived at their address
  • You need to provide a few more details to register – including your national insurance number and date of birth. This makes the electoral register more secure.

How do I register to vote under the new system?

  1. Go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
  2. Fill in your name, address, date of birth and a few other details. You’ll also need your national insurance number, which can be found on your national insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits
  3. Look out for a confirmation to say you’re registered.

To find out more go to www.gov.uk/yourvotematters

Alternatively if you are unable to register online you can download a registration form.

If your application is completed correctly, and not objected to, your details will be added to our list of new electors and we will change your details within seven weeks. We will write to confirm when your application is approved.

Open and Full register

You may want to opt out of the Open (formerly know as Edited) Register. To do so you can contact us on elections@allerdale.gov.uk .

How is the register updated?

Individuals contact us all the time to change their entry on the electoral register - such as a change of address. Also, every year we confirm the details on the register through the annual canvass where we send out Household Enquiry Forms (HEFs) to every household. We have created some FAQs on the process including any concerns you may have about privacy and problems using the web
