Allerdale's Mayor

The Mayor is first citizen of the Borough and is elected from the 56 members every year at the Annual Meeting of the Council. The Mayor chairs meetings of the Council during his/her term of office, and presides at civic and other ceremonial events held in the Borough.

 

      Mayor Allan Caine

Cllr-Allan Caine

  • Allan has served as an Allerdale Borough Councillor for 12 years
  • He has also served as a Workington Town Councillor for 14 years
  • He was formerly the Chairman of Cumbria County Council
  • Allan served in the Armed Forces in Northern Ireland, France, Belgium, Holland and England
  • He worked at the Steelworks in Workington for 42 years, until he retired at the age of 60
  • Allan is married to Elsie, and they have two grown up children
  • His hobbies include gardening and sequence dancing.
  • Allan and Elsie have raised funds for West Cumberland Hospital, Cancer and other charities with their dancing.
  • During his year in office as Mayor of Allerdale, Allan will be supporting the following charities;
    • Alzheimers Society Northwest
    • The Arthritis Research Campaign, and
    • Sailing for the Disabled 

 

Deputy Mayor John (Binky) Armstrong

Cllr Binky Armstrong

  • This is Binky's second term as an Allerdale Borough Councillor
  • He has also served as a Wigton Town Councillor for 16 years, and has served two terms as the Mayor of Wigton
  • Binky served his apprenticeship at Cowan Sheldon's in Carlisle
  • He joined the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment in 1960 and did most of his service in Africa  
  • Binky started his own engineering business in the early 1970's and took a partner in 1974, employing up to 16 people. He took early retirement in 1990
  • He was one of the founder members of the Wigton & District Regeneration Group, which later became part of the North Allerdale Partnership  
  • Binky married Mary in 1956, whom he sadly lost in 1976. He has two sons and three grandchildren  
  • He married Mara in 1989 and says he has been blessed to meet and marry two wonderful women in his life. Mara and Binky were voted Citizens of the Year in May 2006, in recognition of their services to the community of Wigton.
  • Binky has done a considerable amount of charitable work with Mara, helping disabled people and also returning Wigton artefacts to the area  
  • His hobbies include gardening, walking, travelling and auctions
