Diarrhoea & Vomitting Outbreak

Public Health England have released a press statement regarding the diarrhoea and vomitting outbreak:

Dr Nigel Calvert, Consultant in Public Health at the Cumbria & Lancashire PHE Centre said: “Investigations following an outbreak of illness amongst staff and students at Stainburn School have confirmed the cause to be norovirus.

“Staff and pupils who were affected by the outbreak had attended an event at Hunday Manor Country House Hotel in Workington, and investigations at the hotel have confirmed further incidents of sickness. Norovirus is highly infectious and usually spreads by close personal contact. It can also spread through the air or from contaminated surfaces. There is no evidence that the outbreak amongst staff and students from Stainburn School is foodborne spread.

“We are working closely with Allerdale Borough Council, and a deep cleaning schedule is underway with full co-operation from the hotel. Advice has been issued to hotel management and staff and a period of public isolation has been recommended as a precautionary measure to contain any further contamination. We will continue to monitor the situation with council colleagues.”

Public Health England has the following advice if you or anyone in your family is affected by vomiting and diarrhoea:

·        Follow good hygiene measures, including thorough hand-washing, particularly after visiting the toilet and before eating.

·        Do not share towels with others. Where possible, ensure that paper hand towels are used after hand washing and are immediately disposed of.

·        Drink plenty of fluids and rest to prevent dehydration.

·        Make sure that any surface contaminated by vomit or faeces is promptly and thoroughly disinfected after an episode of illness.

·        If symptoms worsen or persist for more than 48 hours, contact your family doctor or take advice from NHS Direct on 0845 4647.

·        Delay any visits to hospitals, care or nursing homes or schools until fully recovered and don’t visit people who are especially vulnerable to infection, such as elderly relatives.
