Allerdale Borough Council promotes food safety at Christmas

2 December 2013

Allerdale Borough Council will be hitting the local supermarkets this week as part of a Food Safety campaign in the run up to Christmas.

On Wednesday 4 December, a team of Environment Health Officers will be in the foyer at Morrisons, Workington between 9.30am-12pm and at Asda, outside the shop entrance, between 1.30pm and 4pm. The following day, Thursday 5 December, they will be at Maryport Co-op between 9.30am and 12pm.

The team will be sharing their top tips on how to enjoy a healthy, happy Christmas including demonstrating how to make sure that giant Christmas turkeys are cooked thoroughly all the way through. They will also be reminding people of the importance of regularly checking fridge temperatures and will be handing out fridge thermometers to residents.

The aim is to promote Food Safety in the home with a special emphasis on festive feasts as well as promoting the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. The Scheme rates food businesses - including supermarkets - on their hygiene standards, based on inspections carried out by the Council. Businesses are rated on a scale ranging from zero, which means ‘urgent improvement necessary’ to a top rating of five, which is ‘very good’.

Residents are encouraged to look out for the green and black food hygiene rating stickers displayed on windows and doors or check online at www.food.gov.uk/ratings to find out how their favourite businesses are doing.
