Bigger and better facilities planned for new leisure centre in Workington

6 November 2014

Councillors in Allerdale are poised to accept £1.5 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Strategic Facilities Fund which will enhance the new swimming pool and leisure centre in Workington.

Thanks to this additional funding, the new leisure centre will feature:

  • A learner pool with a high-tech moveable floor which can be raised or lowered – helping accessibility and safety for the smallest of children and disabled swimmers.
  • Two lifts to give greater accessibility for visitors.
  • A professional-standard timing system, installed in the main swimming pool, for use in local and regional competitions.
  • Additional seating in the swimming pool’s viewing gallery.
  • Enhanced fixed furnishings and equipment - this will range from better audio equipment for the dance studios to improved facilities for disabled people including walk-in steps to the pool rather than traditional ladders, and additional hoists.

The final cost of the building, its interior and exterior facilities, fixtures and fittings will be £11 million, with a £250,000 contingency fund reserved in case of unforeseen issues. The Council’s £9.5 million costs, and the acceptance of Sport England’s £1.5 million offer, are due to be discussed at a meeting of the Council’s Executive on Wednesday 12 November. If Councillors give the figures their approval, then construction work is due to start in early December.

The new swimming pool and leisure centre in Workington will be built on land at Brow Top, close to the town centre. The new centre will feature an eight-lane 25 metre swimming pool, and a separate learner pool, as well as a poolside health suite including sauna and steam room.

There will also be a state-of-the-art fitness suite, four-court sports hall, two squash courts, two dance studios, a spinning studio and a climbing wall. Outside there will be all-weather five-a-side sports pitches and parking for 319 cars, with a wide public plaza in front of the building.

If all goes as scheduled, the leisure centre will open its doors in Spring 2016.
