Love Your Local Market

6 May 2014

A celebration of local markets will be taking place across Allerdale from 14 to 29 May. Allerdale Borough Council will once again be participating in the ‘Love your local market’ campaign, with over 700 markets expected to be taking part nationally.

During this period the Council will be offering ‘tables for a tenner’ at Workington and Silloth markets to all budding market traders who want to try running a market stall for the first time.  Anyone interested should get in touch with the Market Manager, Phil Byers on 07753934540.

There will be music at the Keswick and Workington markets on the 17 and 24 May and on the 29 May in Silloth. There will also be free face-painting for the kids at Keswick market on the 24 May and in Workington on the 28 May.

Saturday 17 May sees the official re-launch of the Cockermouth Local Produce and Craft Market at the United Reformed Church on Main Street. There will be stalls inside the Church Hall and on the forecourt as well as music and free face-painting. Times are 9am to 4pm and all stallholders are from within Cumbria. The market will continue at the Church (having previously been held in Market Place) on the third Saturday of each month, allowing Market Place to remain open to traffic.

Later this month Cockermouth Spring Fair will be going ahead on the Bank Holiday Monday 26 May. There will be fairground rides on Fairfield (Sainsbury’s) car park and market stalls on Wilkinson’s car park. South Street will remain open to traffic.

Joe Broomfield, Town Centre Area Manager said: “The ‘love your local market’ period is a great opportunity to showcase the markets that take place across Allerdale. If you haven’t visited your local market in a while, the last two weeks in May is a fantastic time to go and have a look at what’s available.”

“I’m really pleased that the Cockermouth monthly local produce market is up and running again. We’ve increased the number of stalls and found a perfect alternative location at the United Reformed Church on Main Street that doesn’t require any road closures. The official re-launch on the 17 May should be a really enjoyable day with live music, free face-painting and some excellent local produce on offer.”

“With the Georgian Fair and Cockermouth Carnival postponed this year due to the improvement works on Main Street, we felt it was important that the Spring Fair went ahead as usual. Saying that, closing South Street would have added to the network of diversions already in place, so I’d like to thank Wilkinson’s for allowing the market stalls to be located on their car park for the day.”
