Council reveals new Executive structure

21 May 2015

Allerdale Borough Council has restructured its Executive to give a greater focus on economic development and tourism.

Councillor Mark Fryer has become Deputy Leader of the Council and retains his Economic Growth portfolio. Two of his biggest responsibilities will be management and development of the Council’s assets to maximise their economic potential, and also the continued improvements of the borough’s seven town centres. Mark will also be pushing forward the projects planned by Allerdale Investment Partnership, the innovative initiative established to enable the Council to dispose of surplus assets and deliver the best future development opportunities on these sites.

A new Executive member has also been appointed with specific responsibility for Tourism and Culture. Councillor Bill Jefferson, ward member for Silloth, is well placed for the new role, as he is a Member of the Lake District National Park Authority and Chairman of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. He will take responsibility for the art, culture and museum venues which are owned by the Council, manage the partnerships with the national park and other tourism focused organisations, and drive the Council’s development of tourism in West Cumbria.

The other members of the Executive are Council Leader Alan Smith, who will represent the authority on external partnerships, manage nuclear issues, and oversee the Council’s policy and performance.

Councillor Barbara Cannon will continue to manage the Corporate Resources portfolio, which includes finance and legal and democratic services. She will also look after the Council’s human resources activities.

Councillor Michael Heaslip retains the Locality Services portfolio, which will have a greater emphasis on commercial activities such as trade waste, car parking and leisure.

Councillor Konrad Hansen will look after Regulatory Services, such as environmental health, licensing and bereavement services, as well as customer services.

The Housing, Health and Wellbeing Portfolio will continue to be managed by Councillor Carni McCarron-Holmes, with an emphasis on improving access to high quality health care and suitable safe homes, reducing health inequalities and encouraging wellbeing through leisure, culture, and the environment. Carni will also be the Council’s Armed Forces champion.

And finally, Councillor Phil Tibble will maintain the Transformation portfolio, managing commissioning and procurement, communications and ICT, and the emergency plan.

Council Leader Alan Smith said: “Mark Fryer’s appointment as Deputy Leader and Bill Jefferson’s new role as Portfolio Holder for Tourism and Culture reinforces this Council’s commitment to putting Allerdale on the map in terms of investment and economic development. We not only want to attract visitors here, to spend their money in our towns and enjoy all the area’s attractions, we want to bring big business here too. We will be boosting jobs, improving prospects and ensuring our economy thrives.”
