Allerdale Borough Council announces new Mayor

21 May 2015

Allerdale Borough Council last night [Wednesday 20 May 2015] confirmed Councillor Len Davies, the elected member for Cockermouth All Saints ward, is to continue as its Mayor for the next 12 months.

Councillor Davies has been Mayor of Allerdale for the past year and has served on the authority since 2011. He is also a Cockermouth Town Councillor.

Cllr Davies said: “I was honoured to be asked to be the Deputy Mayor, then Mayor of Allerdale, and I am doubly honoured to be serving in the role for a second year.

“It is a real privilege and an absolute pleasure to be able to meet so many amazing people around the borough. I never cease to be amazed by the fantastic work which is taking place here in West Cumbria, by charities, individuals, and in businesses of all shapes and sizes. I am looking forward to discovering even more of these success stories, to celebrate the great things that are happening here, and to help where I can.”

Cllr Davies’ chosen charities are Barnardos, in support of its work with children at their centres across the borough, and the Cash for Kids appeal, run by CFM Radio, which helps those who have suffered neglect, have special needs, or simply need extra care or guidance.

Cllr Davies added: “My aim is to help those who are most vulnerable in our society – children. I want my charity fund this year to benefit those who are suffering deprivation, domestic abuse and who have disabilities. I hope I can make a difference by raising money for these charities.”

Cllr Davies’ Mayoress for the year will be Harriet Chappell, a family friend who Len knows through his connections with the Royal Air Force Association in Cumbria.

At last night’s Mayor Making ceremony, Councillor Bill Bacon was also installed as Deputy Mayor. His wife Val will be his Deputy Mayoress.

Cllr Davies was born in Liverpool and has two daughters. He joined the RAF aged 15 and served for another 15 years. He then worked in engineering and instrumentation in the private sector. Later in life, he retrained as a psychotherapy counsellor and also worked at a fitness consultant. His first job in Cumbria, after moving here from his native Merseyside in 2000, was as a fitness instructor at Moorclose Leisure Centre in Workington. He then moved to Cockermouth Leisure Centre before retiring in 2009.
