Project commended at Enterprising Britain Awards 2014

8 July 2014

Allerdale Borough Council’s ‘Ways Into Successful Enterprise (WiSE)’ programme team has been awarded a ‘Commended Certificate’ at a major national awards ceremony.

Operated by The Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS), the Enterprising Britain Awards 2014 are part of the Government’s drive to increase entrepreneurial activity in the UK, and celebrate the wide range of activity across the country that stimulates and supports enterprise.

WiSE was first set up by a number of partners in 2007, and is now jointly funded by Allerdale Borough Council and Britain’s Energy Coast to assist entrepreneurs who want to become self-employed or start their own business. It offers a completely free and confidential service ranging from one-to-one coaching and counselling to providing business and training advice and accessing networks.

The project has since supported over 1,200 people across the Allerdale and Copeland areas including achieving employment or self-employment for 633 people.

Neville Reyner CBE DL Hon DLitt, Chairman Young Chamber Limited, which manages the Awards on behalf of the BIS, said: “The 2014 EBA competition produced a very strong field of entries with a high number from across the country being submitted. This year’s award winners should be very proud of their success. The EBA celebrate the enterprising endeavours of initiatives from across the UK and the support shown to these Awards by the Government emphasises the importance it places on developing enterprise throughout the UK.”

Councillor Mark Fryer, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive Member for Economic Growth, said: This is a fantastic achievement and much-deserved national recognition for a hardworking team who have delivered some great results over the last few years. Not only have they supported hundreds of groups and individuals in the area, they have also made many more dreams come true by helping people realise their ambitions of running their own business.”

Lisa Richardson, from Kirkbride worked with WiSE Enterprise Coach, Alison Marrs last year when setting up her own business, ‘Peek a boos’ nursery. She said: “I couldn’t have done it without them. Alison was an amazing help and was always there when I needed her. From providing ideas about running the business to spending time working on the business plan, WiSE really helped to build my confidence and now, almost a year on, I haven’t looked back. I would recommend WiSE to anyone thinking of starting their own business.”

In 2013, WiSE employee, Lady Anne Cunningham was also honoured with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion recognising her work with the project.
