Take part in the commemorations of World War One

2 April 2014

Community groups are being invited to take part in a commemorative event to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

The event takes place in Workington on Saturday 10 May and has been initiated by the Mayor of Allerdale, Councillor Bill Bacon. The 4th Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Band will lead a parade from Central Car Park at 11am and walk through the town via the war memorial in Vulcan's Park to St Michael's Church where a commemorative service will be held.

Civic dignitaries from neighbouring authorities and all the town and parish councils in the borough have been invited to participate in the event. All the primary schools in the district have also been invited.

If any community groups would like to participate in the event, there is still time to get involved. Group leaders are invited to contact the event organisers on 01900 702544 as soon as possible to register their interest.

Councillor Bacon began working on the idea of a commemorative event last year. He said: "It is important to recognise the contribution of the people of this area to our armed forces both today and in years gone by.

“A hundred years is a long time - but it’s not so long when you consider that people alive now had relatives who fought in the First and the Second World Wars. This event is our contribution to the commemoration of all those who gave service and sacrifice, and to mark the 100th anniversary of World War One. I am pleased to be able to host this event in my mayoral year."
