Recycling,
rubbish and waste
Domestic refuse and recycling collections
We provide a weekly domestic refuse (black bin) collection for
all homes in the borough. If your property is not suitable for
wheeled bins, a black sack collection
service is used.
Over 85% of Allerdale residents have a recycling service from
their door. These properties are provided with a small green bin or
bag for paper and card, a purple bag for cans, glass
and plastic and a larger green bin for garden waste. These are
collected on alternate weeks.
Crunch service
Our Crunch service assists residents with the disposal of
additional domestic waste by setting up a temporary disposal point
on specific dates. The service runs in areas where there are no
existing household waste recycling centres. Find out more about when and where the
Crunch service operates.
Bulky item collection
Bulky items are not collected as part of our normal refuse
collections. We can collect these items separately for a
fee.
Recycling facilities
There is a large network of recycling centres within the
Borough where residents can take items for recycling. The larger
recycling sites have a wide range of facilities, such as paper and
card, glass, textiles, cans, plastic bottles and batteries. Smaller
sites such as those in rural villages have facilities for glass and
cans. Some locations also accept motor oil, rubble, household
chemicals and paint.
For more information on recycling facilities near
you please see our Recycling centres
page.
Littering, fly-tipping and street cleaning
We are responsible for the cleaning of all public roads, the
provision and emptying of bins for litter in the borough, the
removal of graffiti from public buildings and also for the removal
of fly tipping. Our authorised officers patrol the borough and can
issue fixed penalty fines to anyone caught dropping litter,
including smoking related items.
Commercial waste and recycling
Commercial waste is waste that is generated as a result of a
business operation regardless of whether the business is part of
your domestic residence or not.
