Electronic government

Internet kioskWhy?

Central Government set a target for all councils to be capable of delivering 100% of their services electronically by 2005. The Local e-Government Programme officially closed in April 2006 although it continues to assist and build upon the progress of local authorities.

However, the key driver to such developments is that of customer expectations. The council must recognise and respond to these changes. Our customers have expectations of the same level of service via the telephone, or other means, that they encounter from other service providers and organisations e.g. Direct Line.

The aim to offer our citizens a range of choices in the way a service can be accessed, telephone, one stop shop, Internet, mobile devices, digital TV, kiosks, enabling greater freedom to make the choices best suited to individual circumstances.

IEG1 Statement

All councils were required to submit to central government an implementing electronic government (IEG) statement by the end of July 2001. In October the DTLGR (Department of Transport, Local Government and Regions) approved Allerdale Borough Council's proposals for its implementation of e-government. We are now working in partnership with Copeland Borough Council, Cumbria County Council and the North West Regional e-Government group to develop our detailed plans for implementing e-government systems.
