Foodbank bin at Allerdale House

Allerdale Borough Council has set up a foodbank donation point in Workington.

With the country back in recession and charity The Trussell Trust announcing that the number of people visiting foodbanks across the UK has more than doubled, Allerdale Borough Council has set up a food donation point at Allerdale House in Workington to encourage people to donate non-perishable food items to North Lakes Foodbank.

North Lakes Foodbank has fed over 1800 over the past year, which is an increase of nearly 400%..

Leader of the Council, Councillor Alan Smith, said: “The current economic situation means that times are tough for many. It is shocking that there is such a great need for foodbanks, and that the need is growing. By having a place here at the council offices where people can donate food, we can help those families in need.

“We are currently working with partners to encourage more food drop-off points.”

The North Lakes Foodbank helps individuals and families in crisis, through the provision of emergency food supplies. All food is given to people identified by care professionals, such as health visitors, doctors and social workers. These distributors give out vouchers which are exchanged for nutritionally-balanced food.
