Grants for better broadband for businesses in Allerdale

13 July 2015

Businesses, charities and social enterprises in Allerdale can apply for grants of up to £3,000 to get better broadband.

Allerdale Borough Council are supporting the scheme, which is to be administered by Carlisle City Council and funded by the government, and covers the costs of upgrading the broadband connection allowing small businesses and other eligible organisations to start reaping the benefits of faster speeds and better connectivity.

The grant pays for the installation costs, while businesses pay any VAT charged and the monthly line rental to the service provider.

The scheme is part of the government’s Broadband Delivery UK and is a national programme running across more than 50 cities offering a total of £40million.

With the support of Allerdale Borough Council, Connecting Cumbria and other partners, Carlisle City Council successfully made the case for the scheme to be extended so that local businesses could also apply for connection vouchers.

The benefits of a faster, better broadband can be felt in numerous ways, whether that be the time taken to upload or download large files to backing up data online or using cloud-based software and video calls.

Mark Fryer, Deputy Leader of the Allerdale Borough Council, said: “This is exactly the kind of scheme which the Council is looking to be part of – to help businesses flourish and grow. I’d encourage every eligible organisation to apply for this funding so that they can reap the benefits of better communications.”

The funding is available on a first come, first served basis with a cut off date for applications set for March 31 2016.
