16/06/2009 - Recycle Week

People in Allerdale are being encouraged to pledge their commitment to recycling next week.

Allerdale Borough Council is holding a series of recycling roadshows at local markets as part of Recycle Week, which runs from 22 to 28 June 2009.

The stall will have information on all of the Council’s recycling schemes, including purple bags and community recycling banks, as well as national recycling and waste minimisation campaigns, such as real nappies and reducing the amount of food waste thrown away.

In addition, anyone who signs a pledge form saying how they plan to do their bit to help the environment can get their hands on free gifts made from recycled materials as well as re-usable cotton shopping bags.

There will also be information on which leftover foods can be re-used to make free compost for the garden along with the opportunity to buy home composting bins for as little as £8 including delivery.

The events will take place between 10am and 2pm at the following locations:

• Wigton market on Tuesday 23 June

• Silloth market on Thursday 25 June

• Keswick’s main square on Friday 26 June

• Workington market on Wednesday 1 July

Councillor Sam Standage, Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive member with responsibility for the Environment, said: “We have already had a great response from residents who have supported our recycling efforts but we hope we can encourage even more people to reduce the amount of waste they produce; re-use any leftover products they can and then recycle whatever is left.”

For more information, contact Allerdale Borough Council’s Recycling team on 01900 702800, email: recycling@allerdale.co.uk or visit the Council's recycling page.
