16/06/2011 - Armed Forces Day
Allerdale Borough Council will be supporting Armed Forces Day by flying the flag for British service men and women, past and present, in the week leading up to it.
On Monday 20 June, Councillor Joe Holliday, the Mayor of Allerdale, will lead a procession of civic dignitaries and armed forces representatives – including veterans, members of the Royal British Legion and cadet units from across the borough – in a procession from the Allerdale House car park in Workington.
At 10.30am, the Mayor will raise an Armed Forces Day flag at Allerdale House and say a few words in honour of those who have dedicated their lives to serving the country in the armed forces.
Father Paul Swarbrick from Our Lady and St Michael's Church at Banklands, in Workington, will lead the attendees in prayer. Everyone is welcome to attend and show their support.
The flag will continue to fly at Allerdale House until Monday 27 June, after Armed Forces Day has been celebrated nationwide.
Armed Forces Day is being commemorated across the country to honour the contribution made by current members of the forces and veterans in peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.
