01/10/2003 - World Mountain Running event for Keswick

Allerdale is to play host to mountain running’s World Masters Championships in 2005.

Organisers of the bid to bring some of the world’s leading mountain runners to Keswick were given the good news in Alaska recently where the 2003 championships took place.

Barry Johnson, well known in Cumbria as a freelance sports consultant, helped spearhead the bid, which attracted support from Allerdale Borough Council, Rural Regeneration Cumbria and Keswick Town Council amongst others.

It means that over 2,000 of the world’s peak performers will compete over two days in September 2005 on courses that will run from Fitz Park in Keswick to the top of either Skiddaw (men’s events) or Latrigg (woman’s events) and back.

Keswick was also hoping to secure the World Trophy for 2005 but organisers decided that New Zealand should host that event shortly after the World Masters.

Barry Johnson said: “The World Masters is one of the world’s premier mountain running events and will attract all age groups from 35 to 70 globally. We are already assured of entries from Australia and New Zealand.

“We could expect in the region of 3,500 runners plus their partners, coaches and supporters all converging on Keswick over the two days so this represents a major boost for the area.”

Coun. John Colhoun, Allerdale Borough Council Executive Member with responsibility for Leisure, said: “We’re absolutely delighted. We were pleased to support the efforts of Barry and his team through the funding and production of a promotional video.

“We approached Sir Chris Bonington to narrate the video, which he very kindly agreed to do. We understand that the video, and Sir Chris’s involvement, was a significant factor in Keswick’s success.

“We will now want to work closely with Barry and his team and other partners to ensure that the event is a major success and helps raise the profile of not just Keswick but the whole of Allerdale and show to an international audience what a superb outdoor culture flourishes here.”
