13/07/2001 - Entertainment events at Maryport Civic Hall have been cancelled until further notice
Entertainment events at Maryport Civic Hall have been cancelled until further notice.
Tests on the hall’s electrical systems have revealed serious problems, which means that the facility has lost its Public Entertainment Licence.
The Civic Hall was closed last week due to problems with the drainage system but that fault has now been rectified after Lower Church Street was closed to traffic whilst new pipes were laid.
The Civic Hall is still open for meetings, weekly church services and Weightwatcher sessions, but all entertainment events have been suspended until further notice with immediate effect.
A Council spokesman said that apologies were due in particular to local entertainer Chrissie Patterson who is trying to organize a variety concert to raise funds for Maryport Carnival.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, July 9, it was cancelled due to the drainage problems and re-booked for this Sunday, July 15.
Mike Phillips, Allerdale Borough Council’s Director of Community Services, said: “Ongoing surveys of the electrical wiring at the hall have revealed problems more serious than first anticipated. We’re still assessing the scale of the problem.
“Wed like to apologise to all concerned for any inconvenience caused and we will be happy to work with organisations in trying to seek alternative venues if possible.”
Events affected by the decision are:
Sunday, July 15 – Chrissie Patterson’s Musical Frolic;
Sunday, July 29 – Line Dance Event;
August 8th-10th – Maryport Open Stage Dance Festival;
Saturday, August 18 – Lince Dance Event;
Wednesday, August 29 – St Mary’s Church Social Event;
September 1 & 2 – Queen of Solway Local Sections Children’s Dance Festival.
