12/07/2005 - Golden oldies lead the way!

With a nonagenarian running in (and finishing) the London Marathon and a 95 year old Japanese setting a new 100 metre world record of 22.04 seconds (note the electrical timing) for his age group, it should come as no surprise to find that, to date, 436 men and women above the age of 40 have entered the 5th World Masters Mountain Running Championship.

The races to be held at Keswick in Cumbria on September 10th have attracted runners, who combine a love of mountains with a love of running, from Italy, Germany, Russia, Ireland and Slovakia as well as the home countries.

It is the first time that the championship has been held in Britain and the first time that a traditionally English “up and down” course has been used for it. Competitors will leave Fitz Park in Keswick and climb approximately 700 metres up Lonscale Fell before descending to finish in the park.

The oldest male competitor is an 81 year old Scottish runner, Alex Duncan from Cumbernauld and the oldest woman is 79 year old Monica Shone who lives in South Wales.

Monica only took up running in the early 80’s and still competes in Masters events, 200 and 400m, on the track (an age-group world record holder at 400m). Formerly she had been a mountain climber, mostly in Wales and the Alps. In 1982 she was persuaded by Chris Brasher to run the London Marathon which she has accomplished three times winning her age group on each occasion. She’s looking forward to the European Masters track and field championships next year and is meanwhile involved with the organisation of the annual Joss Naylor Lakeland Challenge for runners over 50.

Alex, a former cyclist, has only be running for 10 years. He runs all distances on the road from five kilometres to marathons. He used to compete regularly in a 25-mile cross-country race in Scotland. When he turned 80 the organisers persuaded him to retire so that now he just competes in the 12½-mile race.

He runs about 16 to 20 races a year, still has a part-time job to which he cycles every day.

These intrepid runners typify the spirit of Masters events.
