01/08/2005 - Website shortlisted for national award

Allerdale Borough Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious national communications award from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

The Council has been shortlisted in the best use of e-media category of the 2005 CIPR Local Government Excellence in Communications Awards for the development of a website to promote the 2005 World Masters Mountain Running Championships. The Championships will be held in Keswick on the weekend of 10th and 11th September 2005.

Allerdale Borough Council was initially approached by a group of local fell running enthusiasts who sought the Authority’s support in their attempts to bring the major world event to the area. John Reynolds, the Council’s Communications and Marketing Manager, was asked to join the Local Organising Committee for the event and Allerdale’s input since has been significant.

The Council agreed to fund the design of a dedicated website plus a promotional video and associated publicity material such as logos, brochures and posters. The Council also agreed to host the website, www.mountainrunningkeswick.org.uk, which went live in August 2004.

Allerdale’s e-Government Project Manager, Steve Brailey, was drafted in to provide expert guidance in the setting up of the site. He oversaw the recruitment of a suitable web designer and worked with the company, Sinclair Design Solutions Ltd., of Kendal, and the Local Organising Committee to finalise the design.

Apart from direct links to the Council’s own website and those of other partners, Allerdale’s offer to host the website provided another major benefit to organisers. They are able to take advantage of the Authority’s automated, 24-hour e-payment system, which allows a much more efficient method of on-line entry. This is the first time that the World Masters Mountain Running Championships has been able to offer such a facility to potential entrants.

The Council has also enabled the translation of the content of the website into German, French and Italian to reflect the international appeal of the event.

The website provides detailed information about Keswick and the surrounding area, along with tips on where to view the races and 2-D and 3-D maps of the two courses that will be used for the event. A ‘fly over’ of both courses in quick time format is also available.

Councillor Jim Musgrave, Leader of Allerdale Borough Council, said: “It is a major achievement for the Council to be shortlisted, particularly as it is the first time we have entered these awards, and I am delighted that the hard work of our staff has been recognised by the major player in the public relations industry.”

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations is the leading professional body for the UK public relations industry and is the largest public relations membership body in Europe.

The other councils shortlisted for the award are:
• Kirklees Metropolitan Borough Council
• Southwark Council
• Dorset County Council
• Norfolk County Council.

The winner will be announced at the CIPR Local Government Group conference in Cardiff on 23 September.
