15/08/2005 - Masters record entry for Keswick?

KESWICK looks certain to be the setting for the biggest ever Masters World Mountain Running Championships next month.

Organisers are delighted with the number of entrants so far and are confident that the record entry for the event, 741 in Austria two years ago, will be comfortably surpassed.

With over four weeks still go before the championships, over 700 competitors from all over the world have already confirmed participation.

The Masters series of races takes place on Saturday, September 10th, starting and finishing at Keswick’s Fitz Park.

The courses run from Fitz Park out along the lower flanks of Latrigg and Skiddaw before looping onto Lonscale Fell and returning to Fitz Park (first race starts 11am, final race starts 3.30pm).

An Open Race for anyone over the age of 18 will take place on Sunday, September 11 (starting at 12 noon). It will include the Cumbrian Corporate Challenge for teams of at least three runners representing Cumbrian businesses or organisations.

John Reynolds, Allerdale Borough Council’s Communications and Marketing Manager and a member of the Local Organising Committee, said: “We’re very pleased with the level of entries and it looks odds on that we’ll achieve a new record for the event.

“From Allerdale’s point of view, we were keen to support the bid to bring the Masters to Keswick because of the opportunity it presents to showcase the area to a large audience.

“A record entry would certainly help boost the area’s profile and we’re determined to lay on a memorable weekend for those who do attend. We hope that local people will come out in force to support the runners and make it a wonderful experience.”
