25/08/2005 - Double delight for Masters organisers

ORGANISERS of the fifth Masters World Mountain Running Championships in Keswick next month are celebrating a double success.

With a fortnight still to go before the big event, a new record has been set for the number of competitors taking part.

And in a second coup for the organisers, the event’s website has been short listed for a prestigious national award.

The previous record entry was 741 in Austria two years ago. That number was surpassed earlier this week and the final figure looks set to be around 1,000.

Entries have been received from all over the world including the USA, Australia, Russia, Italy, Ireland, Gibraltar, Holland, Germany, Ukraine, Japan, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Serbia and Montenegro.

The Masters series of races takes place on Saturday, September 10th, starting and finishing at Keswick’s Fitz Park.

The courses run from Fitz Park out along the lower flanks of Latrigg and Skiddaw before looping onto Lonscale Fell and returning to Fitz Park (first race starts 11am, final race starts 3.30pm).

An Open Race for anyone over the age of 18 will take place on Sunday, September 11 (starting at 12 noon). It will include the Cumbrian Corporate Challenge for teams of at least three runners representing Cumbrian businesses or organisations.

John Reynolds, Allerdale Borough Council’s Communications and Marketing Manager and a member of the Local Organising Committee, said: “We’re delighted with the response and we hope that local people will come out in force to support the runners and make it a wonderful experience.”

Meanwhile, Allerdale has been short listed for a prestigious national communications award from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations for the quality of the event’s website, www.mountainrunningkeswick.org.uk

It is one of five authorities nominated in the best use of e-media category of the 2005 CIPR Local Government Excellence in Communications Awards.

Allerdale funded the design of the dedicated website, plus a promotional video and associated publicity material such as logos, brochures and posters, and also agreed to host the site, which went live in August 2004.

Apart from direct links to the Council’s own website and those of other partners, Allerdale’s offer to host the website provided another major benefit to organisers.

They are able to take advantage of the authority’s automated, 24-hour e-payment system, which allows a much more efficient method of on-line entry. This is the first time that the World Masters Mountain Running Championships has been able to offer such a facility to potential entrants.

The winner will be announced at the CIPR Local Government Group conference in Cardiff on 23 September.
